I joined a team of around 20 designers from HSBC, Deloite, Digitas and Publicis Sapient to launch a brand new banking platform for HSBC small business customers.

HSBC needed a business banking app that’s relevant today

Business owners in the UK are increasingly turning to mobile apps as the primary way to manage their banking.

By 2018 consumers were flocking to new mobile-only banks such as Starling and Monzo, showing the convenience of mobile as the future of everyday banking. HSBC needed to improve their mobile offering to small businesses to stay competitive in the market.

The problem

The existing mobile offering lacked important features

HSBC already had a well established UK Business Banking platform. The problem was that this was a mostly desktop-web experience, with the mobile app acting as a companion for simple payment tasks and reviewing balances.

HSBC Kinetic was built to provide a mobile-only banking platform for business owners, giving them a way to access HSBC products and expertise on their mobile, wherever they are.

A simple and modern onboarding journey

One of the first things I worked on was a simple and modern onboarding journey allowing customers to download the app and apply for an account immediately without needing to go to a branch or desktop (a first for HSBC).

I helped develop flow forms that used simple inputs and a ‘one thing per page’ approach to offer a simple, swift onboarding flow.

Details like custom transitions between screens help the customers feel a sense of momentum and progress while they applied for an account.
